Our recent project in Gujranwala, Pakistan, focusing on renovating the infrastructure of a high school for deaf and hearing-impaired students to provide them with access to better learning and growth opportunities.
At TT Global Foundation, we believe in the importance of providing equal learning opportunities for students from all walks of life, particularly those with disabilities, who need added investment to ensure they get their chance to thrive. Thus, we are proud to share our latest initiative in Pakistan, focusing on renovating the infrastructure of the Government Deaf and Defective Hearing High School for Boys, located in Gujranwala, home to over 150 students with hearing impairments.
Since its first opening in 1986, the school has had little to no investment, resulting in run down and worn-out building and furniture, and non-functioning utilities such as clean water. The neglected facilities meant that many rooms were not able to be used at all.
We have begun a renovation process addressing the school’s immediate needs, by constructing a new underground bore to ensure water supply to the washrooms and providing 15 computers and ergonomic chairs to their barely functioning computer lab. As shared by the IT teacher, Mr Muhmammed Umer,
“The existing four outdated computers were insufficient to support the IT literacy needs of a class of 20 students. With the provision of additional computers and furniture by TT Global Foundation, we are now able to equip all 20 students with career-oriented IT skills simultaneously."
This initiative is a two-year project, during which we will deliver multiple facility upgrades, including repairing old classrooms, provision of new furniture, further improvements to the computer lab, and critically, renovations of vital school spaces such as an audiology lab that plays a crucial role in the development of the students.
Their situation is unfortunately common across many educational facilities for children with special needs and disabilities located outside of the main Pakistan cities, where the lack of funding is long-standing. Looking ahead, TT Global Foundation intends to support more of these facilities in Pakistan, helping to break down barriers faced by these children and providing them with access to the same learning and growth opportunities as non-disabled students receive in the best big-city schools.
